Medicare Coding

Medicare requires the use of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes for the administration of the vaccines that they cover preventively, including the influenza vaccine. HCPCS code G0008 must be used when billing Medicare for the administration of Seqirus vaccines, regardless of patient age or provide counseling. Some payers, including Medicare, may require that an HCPCS code be used instead of a CPT code to report the administration of influenza vaccines.

How to Update Yearly Vaccine Codes:

The CDC periodically updates their MVX and CVX codes. For MVX codes, go to: https://www2a.cdc.gov/vaccines/IIS/IISStandards/vaccines.asp?rpt=mvx

For CVX codes, go to:

https://www2a.cdc.gov/vaccines/IIS/IISStandards/vaccines.asp?rpt=cvx.

*Note: The CDC will not always update their codes, however it's important to monitor this once yearly to ensure that our clinic is up to date with registry requirements.

To Update MVX Codes:

*Note: Upon entering or updating a new MVX code, be sure to delete the old code associated with last years vaccines.

To Update CVX Codes:

*Note: Choose "Influenza, FLUCELVAX MDV, quad, preservative 186" and/or "Influenza, FLUCELVAX PFS, Inj MDCK, quad 171" under "Vaccine."

Vaccine Information Statement (VIS Statement):

The Vaccine Information Statement (VIS Statement) is the information sheet produced by the CDC that explain both the benefits and risks of a vaccine to vaccine recipients. Visit:
https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/iis/code-sets/vis-barcode-lookup-table.html

to upload the most recent VIS Statement.

*Note: This will need to be updated in Intergy once yearly. Follow directions below.

National Drug Code (NDC code):

Lastly, be sure the National Drug Code (NDC code) is updated every year.

This code is found on the vaccine packaging, however it can also be found at:
https://www2a.cdc.gov/vaccines/iis/iisstandards/vaccines.asp?rpt=ndc

This can be edited in 2 ways. Follow directions below.
*Note: Be sure to note the different NDC Formats. See below.
